Without street lights, the service road connecting the Perungudi and Taramani MRTS stations, is proving risky for motoring at night. Lack of other safety features such as warning boards, reflectors and speed-breakers add another dimension to the problem.

Many residents say they avoid the stretch at night due to poor illumination. Motorists rely on headlights of their vehicles to navigate the stretch.

S. Kumara Raja, president of Federation of Velachery Residents Welfare Associations, says, “Minor accidents occur frequently on this road as it is poorly lit. Though the road is well-laid, it is not being put to good use. If many motorists use this road, the congestion on Taramani-Velachery Main Road will be reduced.

Also, small buses should be introduced on this stretch, as a way of ensuring bus connectivity between the two MRTS stations. Steps must be taken to provide appropriate safety measures on the stretch.” Students of The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University in Taramani say the road is desolate without vehicles and they are therefore forced to take a circuitous route, covering main thoroughfares, instead of using the service lane to access surrounding neighbourhoods.
