Seminar on cyber law and security

The event was organised at D.G.Vaishnav College.

The UGC Coordination Cell of D.G. Vaishnav College, Arumbakkam, organised a national seminar on Cyber Law and Cyber Security.

Faculty members from various parts of south India participated in the seminar.

The objective of the seminar was to identify the problems faced by students with respect to cyber crime; to sensitise the faculty members about the cyber law and cyber security and to impart training on prevention of cyber crime.

State Chief Information Commissioner, K.S. Sripathi started the key note address with the line “TamasoMaa Jyotir-Gamaya” which meant “Lead us from the darkness (of ignorance) to the light (of knowledge)”. He explained how information is very important in today’s world, and he emphasised on the righteous use of information and how to safeguard the information. He also explained the Rights to Information and how to use it wisely.

“It is the duty of an individual to understand laws and put them to use, also added that a person could not be protected himself unless he had awareness about cyber-crime,” Mr. Sripathi emphasised.

Former member of Railway Board, K.B. Shankaran, spoke on the importance of cyber law and how it is going to protect every individual. He walked us through the Amendments of the Information Technology Act. S. R. Mohan Shankar, Head, Testing Services, Zylog Systems (India) Limited, provided various information on security testing, on how to make sure the network is safe from threats, what are the different types of threats, what methods we need to follow to safeguard our data.

ADGP, Coastal Security Group, Tamil Nadu, C. Sylendra Babu, emphasized on safety and security in cyber world. He shared his personal experiences that he came across while serving in different positions in the career. .

Computer Forensics, Pamela Ramalingam, gave a talk on how computer forensics helps in finding cyber criminals. Topics such as collecting evidence, investigation initiation, information handling was covered. She showed videos relating to cyber forensics.

Assistant General Manager (Data Centre), Karur Vysya Bank, Chennai, A. Vijayakumar spoke about the credit-related frauds and security. He explained about what plastic money is, how ATM machines, POS machines work, how credit card frauds happen, and how we can safeguard from these situations.

MD and CEO, Collar Solutions Private Limited, S. Gopikrishna distributed the certificates to the participants. S. Narasimhan, Patron and Principal, DG Vaishnav College, Lt. S.Santhosh Baboo, organising secretary, R. Sampath, associate professor and convener, Department of Corporate Secretaryship were present.
