Burglars broke into a locked house near Maduravoyal and stole 50 sovereigns of gold jewellery and nearly Rs. 7 lakh on Saturday.

The police suspect the involvement of an insider in the crime.

According to a police source, Janarthanan and his family found their house ransacked when they returned evening from a short pilgrimage to a temple in Tiruvallur.

The main door of their fourth floor apartment in Chettiar Agaram had been broken open and fifty sovereigns of jewellery and Rs. 7 lakh were allegedly missing.

Janarthanan, who is employed in a private company at Oragaddam, lodged a complaint with the Maduravoyal police, who brought a sniffer dog and forensic experts to the scene of crime. Fingerprints lifted from the house have been sent for testing.

Meanwhile, the police are trying to find out why the burglar targeted this apartment, ignoring three others on the same floor that were also locked. “It is a bit confusing as there is proper security at the apartment complex,” said a police source.
