Residents object to shifting of school

From traffic snarls to parking issues, a host of problems could emerge from the proposed shifting of a school to Peters Lane in Royapettah, residents complained.

The Little Flower Nursery and Primary School, which was on Besant Road, is likely to be relocated to Peters Lane. Furniture and other equipment have been shifted already. Ramesh Ahuja, a resident of the street for nearly three decades now said, the lane is a dead-end and the school has only one exit. “In case, fire breaks out, the life of hundreds of children is at stake. There aren’t sufficient number of toilets in this building for children. We have already raised objections with various authorities,” he said.

S. Padmanabhan, another resident, said, the street would turn chaotic with traffic snarls if the school was shifted here. “Everyday, when parents come to drop and pick up children, the street will get choked; as such there are vehicles parked on the road and when this starts, it will become even more difficult,” he added.

School authorities said they would relocate only after getting all the required permission from the authorities. Only about 150 children will be studying on the premises. “We have been running the school for four decades and will make sure there are no safety problems in the new building. We plan to construct 4-5 urinals in addition to the existing toilets.”

They said there won’t be any traffic issues since parents would come only for half hour in the morning and evening.
