Residents had to contend with slow movement of traffic near the Kotturpuram bridge on Sunday evening as crowds had gathered to witness fire and rescue services department personnel trying to find a man suspected to have jumped into Adyar river from the bridge.

According to the police, Subash Subramani (32) was distressed over his father’s demise a fortnight ago. On Sunday evening he called his relatives and told them he was going to jump into the river from the Kotturpuram bridge. “One of his relatives called us and informed us. We immediately sent a team to search for the man,” said a fire service officer.

When the fire service personnel and Subash’s relatives reached the bridge, they found his footwear on the nearby pavement. “His bike was parked near the Kotturpuram park opposite the bridge,” said the officer.

A fire services boat started searching for the man in the water but their efforts were in vain till 9 p.m. “We don't know what happened to him. There are a lot of rumours doing the rounds,” said one of his relatives.

“We are tracking his cell phone signal. It's not clear if he has jumped,” said a police source.

Last week a father threw his six-year-old daughter into the Adyar river from Thiru-Vi-Ka bridge and then committed suicide by jumping in. The girl was rescued.
