Recording court proceedings in a case using a cell phone proved too costly for a man in the Madras High Court on Wednesday.
Taking suo motu contempt proceedings, the court directed the Registry to immediately destroy the instrument, leaving no room for retrieval of the record, after returning the SIM card and battery to the person.
Accepting the unconditional apology of the 40-year-old person, who hails from Hosur, the court admonished him.

On Wednesday, when Justice S.Nagamuthu was dictating an order in a suit in the open court, counsel said a person was recording the entire proceedings on his cell phone. It was found that the person was the son of the appellant in the case. He said he did the recording to inform his father about the proceedings. He claimed he did not know the consequences of his act. He tendered an unconditional apology and pleaded with the court to take a lenient view. He submitted that his instrument may be destroyed but sought return of the SIM card. He assured the court that he would not repeat the act.
