Chennai may continue to receive intermittent showers for two or three days as a result of the well-marked low pressure area that is expected to intensify into a depression by Tuesday.
The scale of rainfall for the next few days in the city and coastal Tamil Nadu will be determined by the movement of the system formed over southeast Bay of Bengal, said officials of the Meteorological department.
The weather station in Ennore recorded 10 cm, the highest amount of rainfall during the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday. The areas on the city’s fringes fared better. While Kelambakkam received 3 cm, Cholavaram and Red Hills that house reservoirs recorded 2 cm during the same period.

Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registered less than one cm till 8.30 a.m. on Monday. However, several roads across the city were waterlogged following sporadic showers during the day. Between 8.30 a.m. and 5.30 p.m., Nungambakkam registered 1.2 cm of rain and Meenambakkam recorded 3.5 cm.
Y.E.A.Raj, Deputy Director of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, said the rain spell is expected to reduce the deficit in rainfall. “We are tracking the movement of the system. If the system moves in the west, north-westwards direction, several districts will get good rainfall,” he said.
According to the Met department, isolated heavy rain may occur over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry till Wednesday.
