Students and staff of Queen Mary’s College celebrated former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam’s 83 birthday on Wednesday by planting saplings on the campus.
“This is our centenary year, so we decided to make it a grand function and invited a large number of people, including Sheik Saleem, Mr. Kalam’s grandson,” said Akthar Begum, college principal.
“Mr. Kalam is an inspiration to most college students. This year, we took out a rally with a number of students wearing Abdul Kalam masks,” she said.

The programme, which began in the morning on Wednesday, was attended by close to 700 students.
On the occasion, 84 saplings were planted around the campus. The students printed placards with various quotes by the former president and also wrote poems on him and his teachings.
