In a bid to encourage people to conserve energy, the Tamil Nadu Electrical Inspectorate is planning to install power-saving equipment in select places in the State to demonstrate the benefits of energy conservation.

Sources in the department said that the process is on to procure equipment such as power optimiser and UPS worth Rs.44 lakh to install in lime kilns.

With this, electricity consumption could be saved by a minimum of 15 per cent.
Similarly, residents of rural areas, including around the city, would be encouraged to use light-emitting diode lamps at household level and for street illumination.
The project worth Rs.13 lakh would be completed in two months.

If successful, the department would send the proposal to Central government to be replicated across the State.
Sharing expertise
The department would also share its expertise on energy efficiency with industries and local bodies and assist them in such projects, sources said. It would also procure GPRS-based energy metering devices to monitor the projects.
The department is also in the process of installing a one KW solar power plant on its office premises in Guindy at a cost of Rs.2 lakh to showcase the benefits of the renewable energy. There are also plans to campaign about the use of LED for energy efficiency through street plays across the city, the sources said.
