The preparation of the detailed project report to create escalators to connect Tambaram railway station with the market and Grand Southern Trunk Road has been delayed again. The announcement to this effect by the municipality evoked a sharp response from Opposition members in the Tambaram Municipality.

A resolution placed before the council during a meeting sought the extension of the maintenance contract of public toilets at Anna bus terminus – an issue raised by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) members.

DMK councillor, S. Indiran said: “The project, which was announced two years ago, is not being taken seriously by the ruling party. This is despite the heavy traffic on the arterial road and resultant hurdles faced by pedestrians.”

Municipal Chairman M. Karikalan said the consultancy firm had sought more time to submit the DPR, which will be finalised before October-end. They will then have discussions with the State government to get administrative and financial sanction.

However, ruling party sources hinted that there may be a change in the design of the foot overbridge, which is likely to delay this project further.
