Over 8,000 people have reported the loss of their documents, such as driving licence and passport, through the online facility introduced by the State Crime Records Bureau a week ago.

The State Police had introduced two facilities through the Tamil Nadu police website (http://eservices.tnpolice.gov.in) for sharing of road accident case documents with victims/accused and reporting the loss of documents such as driving licence, vehicle registration certificate, passport and other education certificates. The online facility was launched by Chennai Police Commissioner A.K.Viswanathan in the presence of Additional Director General of Police Seema Agarwal, Chief of the State Crime Records Bureau.

Following the new rule to carry the original driving licence, a large number of people had reported the loss of documents, particularly the driving licence.

The Hindu, Ms. Agarwal said, “Across the State, over 9,042 lost document reports were generated by complainants utilising the facility from August 31. Out of them, 8,006 persons reported the loss of driving licences.”

Process simplified

The objective of the online facility was to simplify the process of filing police complaint on the loss of documents such as passport, vehicle registration certificate, driving licence, school/college certificate, and ID card.

The user would be authenticated based on the one time password sent to his/her mobile number. Any one of the government issued photo IDs such as Aadhar, PAN, driving licence or voter ID is needed to be uploaded for identification. Once the required fields are filled, the lost document report would be generated instantly with a unique reference number.

Simultaneously, a copy of the LDR document would also be sent to the user’s e-mail account.

Ms. Agarwal also said, “In this process, the police will not conduct any enquiry on the complaint lodged. However, giving false information to police is a punishable offence.” Utilising the new online facility, the victims of road accidents could get their insurance claims settled expeditiously.

The victim, accused and legal representatives of the deceased in road accident cases could benefit from this facility. The users could access the documents based on their mobile numbers registered with the police during the course of investigation. Ms. Agarwal said, “In the past, victims of road accidents had to wait inordinately to get compensation from insurance companies. There is a possibility of getting compensation through courts within three months.”

Nominal fee

A nominal fee of ₹10 per document would be charged that was payable online by using net banking.

Additionally, a copy of the downloaded document would also be automatically sent to the user’s e-mail account. The process of integrating this service with the Common Service Centre was in progress and this service would also be available through CSCs in due course.
