A history-sheeter turned police informer was stabbed to death in Aminjikarai on Monday. Deepak Raj, police said, was killed inside a public toilet in M.M. Colony in the morning.
Living with his mother Kala on Perumal Koil Street, Deepak had been to prison several times for his involvement in criminal offences.
After his release from prison last year, he decided to lead a life away from crime and even helped the city police by passing on clues about other offenders. He had recently gotten into a brawl with a mechanic who had misbehaved with his wife, police said.

They added that they were on the lookput for the suspects and that a team was investigating the crime.
2 held for cell phone theft
Vepery police arrested two men, including a college student, on charges of stealing cell phones.

Police said A. Lokesh (21) of Mannali and a second year student of Economics in a city college and S. Karthik (27) an autorickshaw driver, were arrested by a crime team that was acting on a complaint from Gautaman (55), whose cell phone was stolen by two men travelling on a motorcycle. Investigations led them to the duo, who police suspect are a part of a larger gang involved in robbing phones and gold jewels.
In another case, police detained two youth who were involved in cases under the Goondas Act.
Police said S. Easwaran (26) and K. Jitendran (25) of New Washermenpet were involved in six murder cases in the city and that they had been on the lookout for the duo, who was a part of the gang led by K. Ravi. They were only nabbed recently.
