Police chase students half way down Anna Salai, two held

They were remanded in custody and sent to prison, police added.

A police team gave chase to a group of students of the Government Arts College, Nandanam, on Anna Salai on Wednesday.

The students, armed with clubs, knives and stones, were at a bus stop near Shanthi theatre, waiting to attack students of a rival college. The police team managed to apprehend two of the students.

According to S. Senthil Kumaran, assistant commissioner of police, Triplicane, following a tip-off that over 15 students with arms had congregated at a bus stop near Shanthi theatre, a team was sent. “The students ran at the sight of the police and we had to chase them down. We apprehended two students who were carrying knives. The group had come to attack students of Presidency College over an earlier dispute,” Mr. Kumaran added.

The arrested were identified as Mohammed Ali (18) and P. Kumar (22), both B. Com second-year students of the Government Arts College, police said.

Earlier, on Tuesday evening, two groups of students from Pachaiyappa’s College and Presidency College clashed in the Mint area with knives and clubs. A police team rushed to the spot and the students dispersed when they saw them. However, they were chased and five students – Divakar, Deena Dayalan, Saravanan, Dinesh and John Bosco, all students of Pachaiyappa’s College, were arrested. Two knives and clubs were seized from the students.
