Chennai Metro had earlier announced that it would accept payment for parking only through smart cards

Commuters of Chennai Metro who leave their vehicles at parking lots of stations have been facing payment issues.

Sometime ago, Chennai Metro announced that it would accept payment for parking only through smart cards. Commuters who have trip passes cannot use them to make payment; they have to separately purchase a smart card and pay. This irked many passengers.

Balakumaran S., a resident of Nanganallur who travels to Thousand Lights every day, said, “When they bring in a rule that all commuters have to pay only through smart card, they should have also thought about what those with trip passes will do and incorporate a facility wherein they can pay through trip passes as well. Why force us to have two different cards?”

Glitches continue to dog the system, wherein the machine at the parking lot doesn’t deduct money, shows vehicle is not in the parking lot or overcharges users, sources said.

According to Metro officials, they have been identifying issues and trying to resolve them.
