Patch-work begins on rain-hit roads

Chennai Corporation workers using cement concrete to fill potholes in roads on Wednesday.

The Chennai Corporation on Wednesday began patch work on rain-battered roads in the city. The complete re-laying of the damaged stretches would be done only after the north-east monsoon withdraws.

Roads such as Sardar Patel Road, Montieth Road and Purasawalkam High Road were among the stretches where patch work using cement concrete was carried out on Wednesday.

Many roads in the city have been damaged on account of road cuts and the recent rains. The damaged roads include Ennore High road, Prakasam Salai, Kamarajar Salai, Perambur High Road, Stephenson Road, Konnur High Road, Kolathur Main Road, Nelson Manickam Road, Kilpauk Garden Road, New Avadi Road, Anna Nagar Third Avenue, Kaliamman Koil Street, Arunachalam Street, Valluvarkottam High Road, N.S.K.Salai, Velachery Main Road and St. Mary's Road.

The assessment of damaged roads in newly added areas of the city would be completed by this month. Work on re-laying of the roads would be taken up after the rains.

A total of 292.16 km interior roads in the city would be re-laid at a cost of Rs.59.64 crore after the rains. According to a press release, the civic body has plans to re-lay 121 bus route roads after the monsoon.
