The 64 buildings found to have violated building norms in T. Nagar have a massive parking space deficiency, according to the results of a survey published by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA).
As against space for 2,611 cars they should have cumulatively allotted, only slots for 86 cars are available – a shortfall of parking space for 2,525 cars.
Data on building violations pertaining to parking space, Floor Space Index (FSI) and set back in T.Nagar were published by the CMDA on its website on Tuesday.

The data is part of the results of the survey on unauthorised buildings conducted in T.Nagar during August 2007. The High Court-appointed monitoring committee recently directed the CMDA to publish the results of the survey.
The width of Ranganathan Street is about 10 metres and multi-storied buildings are not permitted on this road. However, many of the buildings identified on the road are multi-storeyed.
According to the survey, a building on Usman Road has a FSI of 8.99, while what is permitted is only 1.5. FSI is the total built-up area divided by the plot extent. The building must have a mandatory parking space for 266 cars within its site. But space for parking only one car is provided, according to the survey.

A building on Usman Road has 11 floors, including the basement with violations pertaining to FSI and car parking norms. It has an FSI of 9.06.
A building on Ranganathan Street with a plot extent of just 5,580 sqft has a built up space of 55,800, according to the survey report. In the case of a building on Usman Road, the total built-up area is 7,089 sq.m with an FSI of 8.42. However, what is permitted is only1,263.51 sq.m or 1.5 FSI.
Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS), in a reply to an RTI query by Motilal Street Residence Welfare Association, T.Nagar, said that 90 per cent of the buildings on Ranganathan Street have violated norms.
The response said that the TNFRS has issued show-cause notice to 38 shops on Ranganathan Street and no shops had responded to the notice.
