‘Panic’ button in Chennai call taxis soon

December 09, 2014 03:05 am | Updated 03:05 am IST - CHENNAI

The Transport Department plans to introduce new provisions to streamline the call taxi service in the city.

A uniform rate card, installation of the GPS-tracked digital meters and ‘panic’ button in the passenger’s seat will be made mandatory.

Officials said the ‘panic’ button would be linked to the Police Control Room.

A senior official of the Transport Department said call taxis had been operating under the regular Contract Carriage Permit. Based on a directive from the Madras High Court, a preliminary meeting was held last week with call taxi operators to work out methods to streamline the service.

The decision follows the rape of a 27-year-old MNC executive by a call taxi driver in New Delhi on December 5.
