An inter-departmental committee formed to check the safety of children and their transportation, inspected 100 school buses in Aynavaram and Anna Nagar on Tuesday.

The committee, comprising regional transport officers, revenue officials, assistant commissioners of police and chief education officers, checked the buses and found that 10 buses had minor faults.

“We check whether the buses have an emergency exit, first-aid box and space to store bags. We also check whether the school bus driver has a minimum of five years’ experience,” said an official from the State transport department.

The buses were asked to arrive for an inspection at 10 a.m. after dropping the students off at school.

“Since we have intensified our checks on school buses, most of them are properly maintained,” said the official.
