Organic compost on sale in Mylapore

Fertilizer prepared from cow dung at Kapaleeswarar temple

If you are in the need for quality organic compost, head right to Kapaleeswarar temple in Mylapore. For they have just begun selling compost in 1 kg bags.

The compost is a byproduct of their biogas units that use 150 kg of cow dung from 25 cows in the temple’s goshala.

The resultant slurry is mixed with flowers and

vilva leaves used for daily pujas and made into compost.

‘600 bags in stock’

An official source of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department at the temple, explained that they had about 600 bags in stock. Each bag is priced ₹25.

“Exnora Green Temple takes the slurry from the two biogas plants once in 21 days, dries it, cleans it and packs it in compostable bags for us. The compost has been certified as organic through tests,” the official explained. In 2017, the temple installed two biogas units as a pilot project and has been been using the gas to cook food for the ‘anna dhanam’ scheme.
