Deputy Chief Minister O. Paneerselvam inspected four Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) sites — K.P. Park, Mortinger Street, Grey Pallam and B.S. Murthy Nagar — on Wednesday. Residents wanted basic facilities to be improved in these localities.
On Wednesday morning around 11.30, the deputy chief minister started his inspection with the new TNSCB tenements in K. P. Park. Out of the total 1,536 tenements, 672 have already been constructed. The remaining 864, that were demolished and reconstructed, will also be handed over to the residents shortly, said Mr. Paneerselvam. Residents gathered around him and requested him to take measures to hand over the tenements soon. “It will be done in 15 days,” he said to a resident. Work on phase II of K. P. Park, where 1,056 houses will be constructed, is in progress.
He then visited Grey Nagar Palam tenements that were built in 1975. “A total of 448 tenements will be demolished and reconstructed. There will be five storeyed buildings,” said a TNSCB official. The deputy chief minister also inspected the TNSCB houses in B.S. Murthy Nagar where out of 320 houses, 240 have been reconstructed. “As we don’t have sufficient space, we will demolish the remaining 80 houses and then provide them houses in the K. P. Park phase II,” said a TNSCB official.

Mr. Paneerselvam ended his inspection with the tenements in Mortinger Street where 972 houses will be constructed in the second phase. Already 960 houses have been constructed and people are living here for the past few months.
Residents said that there was an urgent need to ensure safety in all these tenements. They claimed that anti-social elements in the locality have made their life, a nightmare. “There is no compound wall around the TNSCB buildings on Mortinger Street. We hope the Deputy Chief Minister noticed it,” said a resident.
