One-year RI for driving on wrong side of road

A 26-year-old man was sentenced to one-year imprisonment for driving rashly on the wrong side of a road and causing the death of an auto-driver.

Officers of the traffic investigation unit, Guindy police station, said a TATA SUMO driven on the wrong side of the road by S. Mathivathanan of Thiruvanmiyur on September 3, 2009 had collided with an autorickshaw near the American School, Taramani. The auto driver Raja was killed. Mathivathanan was charged with offences under Sections 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way) 304-A (Causing death by negligence) of IPC and Motor Vehicle Act.

S. Balakrishnan VI Metropolitan Magistrate, Egmore said that the prosecution had proved that the accused had been driving the vehicle on the wrong side of road.
