Thiru-vi-ka Nagar police have arrested another youth in connection with the murder of a 52-year-old woman, whose body was found in her residence in Perambur on Wednesday.

The police had arrested J. Karthik (24), a conservancy worker from Purasawalkam, within three hours of the discovery of the body.

According to the police, Karthik had befriended the victim Durgadevi, a moneylender, and visited the latter’s house on numerous occasions.

“He decided to murder Durgadevi in order to steal her gold jewellery. He planned to commit the murder on Monday, but failed. On Tuesday night, he returned with his friend M. Karthi. The duo slit her throat and escaped with 10 sovereigns of gold jewellery,” said R. Sudhakar, deputy commissioner of police, Pulianthope.

Durgadevi’s murder came to light on Wednesday evening when her daughter Hemalatha came to visit her mother and found her lying in a pool of blood in her one bedroom house in Perambur.
