One killed, two injured as MTC bus rams call taxi

A 70-year-old woman was killed and two others were critically injured when an MTC bus and a call taxi collided on Kamarajar Salai off Marina Beach on Friday.

Police said the accident occurred at 10.45 a.m. on Friday near Tiruvalluvar statue when a speeding MTC bus - route no. 109 - proceeding towards Broadway tried to overtake another MTC bus. The bus collided with the call taxi heading towards Mylapore with two passengers — Hemavathi and her grand-daughter Anandavalli, 24 .

Public and the traffic police personnel rescued the call taxi driver and the two passengers from the mangled car. They were rushed to Government Royapettah Government Hospital. However, Hemavathi succumbed to her injuries on the way while the other two — Anandavalli and Venkatesh, the driver — have been admitted. Immediately after the accident the bus driver, Rajendran, fled the scene. The Anna Square Traffic Investigation are investigating the case.

Traffic went out of gear following the accident on the arterial Kamarajar road during peak hours.
