Over 50 officers of different wings of the Armed forces graduated from the Flying Instructors’ School (FIS) in Indian Air Force Station in Tambaram last week.
Air Marshal S. Neelakantan, Air officer-in-charge personnel, presided over the valedictory function of the course on Friday.
The event marked the conclusion of the training programme that will make the successful officers train trainee pilots. A press release said the role of FIS is to train operational pilots, of the three defence services, paramilitary forces and friendly foreign countries, as flying instructors. They are trained to impart air and ground instructions to the trainees.

The training of 139 Qualified Flying Instructors Course commenced in June. The 52 officers who graduated on November 20 include 48 officers of the Indian Air Force, one from Indian Army and three from Indian Navy. The course is a gruelling 25-week package, comprising academics and flying training with tests and exams at regular intervals. The focus during ground training is interfacing theoretical knowledge with practical aspects of aircraft systems and piloting. The use of computers as a teaching aid is given high priority, the release added.
