No more Tamil film DVDs at Burma Bazaar

Shop owners selling digital video discs (DVDs) in Burma Bazaar have decided not to sell prints of Tamil films in the future.

The decision comes in the wake of regular police raids on the shops. A few shop owners have also been slapped with cases under the Goondas Act in the past.

“After consulting the police and members of the film fraternity, we have taken the decision to not sell Tamil film DVDs, old or new,” says Saravanan, office-bearer of the shop owners’ association of Burma Bazaar.

Stating that screws are tightened by the police every time someone files a complaint, he says shop owners have begun to explore alternative business ventures.

Almost 100 shops, which previously sold pirated discs, have shut down. Only about 150 DVD shops remain. The shop owners will, however, continue to sell non-Tamil film DVDs, as usual.
