The inspection ordered by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) of the Marina Loop Road project by an Advocate Commissioner was halted on Friday after local fishermen gheraoed the team demanding that the road expansion be scrapped.
Last week, the NGT, hearing a petition challenging the whole project, ordered for an Advocate Commissioner’s inspection to determine if the road was being expanded on the seaward side. The petition had contended that the project was in violation of Coastal Regulation Zone Rules.
When the team headed by lawyer K.R. Harin began inspection on Friday, about 50 residents of Nochi Kuppam, a fishing hamlet, insisted that he record their objection to the project. The team explained that this was not under their purview and they were there to only measure the road for violation and check if there were any encroachments on the stretch.

However, the fishermen gheraoed the team which also consisted the petitioner in the case and Corporation officials. This forced the team to cancel the inspection.
The NGT will hear the case again on Monday. Earlier, it had stayed the work temporarily till further orders.
