“Crime control and police welfare will be among my focus areas,” said city police commissioner T.K. Rajendran, speaking to The Hindu on Monday.

It has been 72 hours since he took charge as the city police commissioner and T.K. Rajendran has started studying the city and the mode of functioning of the police in the metro. On Sunday afternoon, he paid a visit to the Mambalam police station.

“I need some time to study the city. It is only after this I can decide upon anything,” he said speaking to

On Sunday morning, he visited the Babu Jaganjeeva Rao stadium in New Washermanpet where a government employment fair is being organised. “It has been many years since we saw a commissioner coming to a venue and inspecting. It was very encouraging,” said a police constable attached to New Washermanpet police station.

If visiting the venue made police personnel in North Chennai happy, those at Mambalam were elated upon seeing a city police commissioner in their station after a long while. He also checked the water supply facility outside the station, officers at the station said.

Many officers feel that it is a good sign that a senior police officer is visiting stations. “We hope he takes care of police welfare too. We are all stressed out,” said one of the police personnel.
