The new City Police Commissioner, Additional Director General of Police T.K. Rajendaran, is a postgraduate in Defence Studies from University of Madras.
A native of Olaipadi in Tiruvannamalai district, Mr. Rajendran, 58, had his primary education at a government panchayat union school in his native village and did his graduation in defence studies from Voorhees College, Vellore. He joined the Indian Police Service in December 1984 and his first posting was as Assistant Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore.
He has served as Deputy Commissioner of Police at Chennai Airport and Chennai South and prior to this post, he was ADGP, Law and Order, Tamil Nadu. Mr. Rajendran is a recipient of President Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2001 and Meritorious Service in 2010.

He replaces ADGP S. George, who took charge as the City Police Commissioner for a second term in May 2014, three weeks after a bomb blast rocked the Chennai Central station. Mr. George will now head the Prisons Department. The department has been in the news following the recent riots in which policemen were injured. He is also an officer of the 1984 batch.
Mr. George was appointed as City Police Commissioner in September 2012 and was transferred by the Election Commission of India in April 2014.
A month later, he was back as Commissioner for the second term.
