New nameboards for 1,083 streets

Work on installation of nameboards of 1,083 streets in the city will be completed in two weeks, said Mayor M.Subramanian.

Inspecting the work on Montieth Road on Tuesday, he said that the installation of nameboards were part of the Special Roads Programme 2010-2011 under which an allocation of Rs.60 crore was made six months ago for improvement of city roads to better standards.

Cost of Rs.3.75 crore

The stainless steel nameboards, made of retro-reflective material, are being installed at a cost of Rs.3.75 crore, he said. Work on installation of the new nameboards has been completed on 358 roads and the work on 148 roads is under way, Mr. Subramanian said.

The flex boards in the existing gantries have been replaced by retro-reflective display boards on 62 gantries at a cost of Rs.1.08 crore. Work on 151 new retro-reflective boards with gantries would also be completed in two weeks at a cost of Rs.5.17 crore, Mr.Subramanian said.

Signage in 1,400 spots on roads is also under way at a cost of Rs.2.21 crore.

The display boards, street nameboards and signage would be visible to motorists even from a distance during the night.
