Puppet shows, Kolam and rangoli competitions, Tamil plays and heritage walks are among the many events which will be held as part of the 17th edition of the Mylapore festival from January 10 to 13.

The festival, which endeavours to make use of and highlight public spaces in the area, will have the events and competitions held in the streets around the Kapaleeswarar temple and Nageshwara Rao Park.

“What started off as a Kolam competition has now grown into a modern day ‘thiruvizha.’ The festival has been designed to involve as many children and adults as possible either as participants or volunteers and to effectively utilise public spaces,” said T.T. Srinivasaraghavan, Managing Director of Sundaram Finance. For the last 10 years, cloth bags had been distributed to people as part of the festival. This year too over 10,000 cloth bags will be distributed free of cost. “Bhumi, an NGO from the city, will be interacting with people to create awareness about the use of cloth bags,” he added.

Details about the schedule of the festival are on

The festival will kick off on Thursday at 7 a.m. with a mike-less concert by students of Sir Sivaswamy Kalalaya school at the Nageswara rao park. Vincent D’Souza, festival director, said two Tamil plays would be staged. “An exhibition of old photos of Mylapore as well as an art exhibition would be set up on South Mada street,” he added.
