A 42-year-old worker slipped from a 50-feet-tall pillar on an MRTS site in Thillaiganga Nagar late on Tuesday. He died in hospital later.

According to the Adambakkam police, G. Bheema Rao, a native of Jharkhand, was perched atop a pillar on the railway line that is under construction between Velachery and St. Thomas Mount. Around 11.30 p.m. on Tuesday, he slipped and fell from a height of about 50 feet. He was rushed to a private hospital in Madipakkam and was bleeding profusely. He succumbed to his injuries later.

A case under IPC Section 304 (a) — accidental death caused due to negligence — was registered at the Adambakkam police station. Safety norms were not followed and basic precautionary measures were not taken at the site, the police said. Further investigation is on.

Safety of workers engaged in massive infrastructure projects such as Metro Rail, MRTS, real estate and underground drainage networks is an area of concern in the city and leaves much to be desired. In recent times, a handful of lives, especially of migrant workers, have been lost in accidents on construction sites across the city.
