She decided to give up her baby as it was born of an illicit affair

Hunt for a kidnapped baby’s biological mother sent the police into a tizzy late on Saturday.

The search ended in Gingee near Tiruvannamalai on Sunday morning and exposed an unlikely chain of events.

It all began when Seetha, a Nepali woman, went to the children’s hospital in Egmore with a week-old male baby. The hospital staff grew suspicious of the woman and alerted the police.

Women officers who interrogated Seetha found that the baby was not hers but given to her by a friend, Shanti of Aminjikarai.

When the police traced Shanti, they found that she had got the child from another friend Selvi, who in turn, got the baby from a friend in Gingee near Tiruvannamalai.

A police team was sent to Gingee and during investigation, it was found that the child’s mother had decided to give up her baby as it was born of an illicit affair.

“As Seetha, the Nepali woman, did not have a child of her own, she had expressed desire for a baby to her friend. When the child’s mother in Gingee heard of this from her friend, she decided to hand over the baby to someone in need rather than abandon it,” a police officer said.

The officers interrogated the women but no case was registered as there was no complaint from the mother.
