A mob of persons from Urur Kuppam went on a rampage on Sunday morning after Kuppusamy (32), a conservancy worker, died of injuries at a private hospital. The group damaged three houses and burnt two bikes and a boat.

They were demanding the arrest of two persons — Mahesh (29) and Karthik (25) — who they claimed were responsible for his death. The brothers had sold their biriyani shop to the deceased a few months ago. He was selling biriyani as a part-time business in Besant Nagar.

According to police, the brothers went to his house on Friday demanding that he return the shop, which had prospered after Kuppusamy took it over. However, he refused and violence broke out in which he was grievously injured. He was admitted to a private hospital and died on Sunday morning. A section of relatives and locals staged a road roko in front of the hospital around 8.30 a.m. Even as senior police officials, including Adyar Deputy Commissioner of Police R. Sudhakar, intervened and promised to nab the culprits, another group went to the houses of the accused and their relatives in Urur Kuppam and broke furniture, electrical fittings and burnt the bikes and boat.
