Barely a fortnight after the city traffic police personnel warned of penal action against parents of minors who are caught riding/driving vehicles on the road, a 16-year-old boy riding a high-end bike knocked a pedestrian to death on Ambattur Estate Road on Wednesday night. The boy died on Thursday. The police have registered a case against the teenager’s mother.
The minor boy was the son of a businessman in Ayyapakkam and was studying in a leading private school in Mogappair.

On Wednesday evening, he left home on his bike and was riding rashly on the busy Ambattur Estate Road. He knocked a pedestrian, Babu, 42, a daily wager from Pudukottai, killing him on the spot. The boy then rammed a tree and fell down from the bike, sustaining severe injuries.
Passersby and the traffic police personnel rushed the boy to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Thirumangalam Traffic Investigation wing registered a case against his mother Meena since she is the owner of the vehicle as per records.
The police booked her under 304 A (causing death due to negligence) and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. After the boy’s death, the charges against his mother had abated, said a senior police officer.
