Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) may soon start building staff quarters for several of its employees.

A multi-storeyed building, which will house about 50 CMRL employees, will come up on the premises of a depot in Koyambedu.

This would be specially built for the employees, mostly engineers and drivers deployed in the Operational Control Centre (OCC) inside the depot, CMRL officials said.

The Rs. 198-crore depot spread over 26 hectares houses the OCC among other offices. From this centre, officials can control and monitor the movement of trains running across the city. The train would be stationed here when they require maintenance, an official of CMRL said.

It was essential that employees working in the depot stayed close so they could reach the centre as soon as possible in case of an emergency, he said.

Tenders have been called for and it may take a while to complete the quarters, said the official.
