Parents, teachers, special educators and representatives from city schools came together at a symposium organised by the Madras Dyslexia Association (MDA) that delved into the concessions and exemptions offered for children with specific learning disabilities (SLDs).
Speakers detailed the concessions and exemptions offered by the CBSE, the Tamil Nadu State Board and the National Institute of Open Schooling.
“While there are concessions available across boards, concerns crop up when we examine how they are implemented,” said D. Chandrasekhar, president, MDA.

Moderating a discussion, Sushila Nataraj of the MDA said schools had a vital role to play in reaching out to parents and children.
Speaking about the assessment process, Harini Ramanujam, CEO of MDA, said schools either refer students who might be facing learning difficulties or parents themselves take their children to meet an expert.
