Around 70 students of DD Medical College, Tiruvallur along with nearly 100 law college students staged a road blockade near Raj Bhavan on Tuesday evening. Police had to forcibly remove the protesting students from the road as they were affecting traffic flow. They were detained at a wedding hall in Guindy for about two hours and then released.
Students of the medical college have been staging a sit-in protest on the campus of Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University for the last two weeks demanding that the university take measures to get their college recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI). The college was de-recognised in 2011.
“The State governor is the Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. We staged the road block to demand that the State government request MCI to take steps to recognise our college so that we can continue our medical education,” a student of DD Medical College said.

He also said two of the women students had fainted at the spot due to low blood pressure. The other students continued to protest on the university campus. Some students had fallen ill due to the continual protests, he added.
Another student said a senior official of the health department met them at the university a few days ago and asked them to approach the MCI directly.
The road blockade had brought traffic to a standstill in the area for sometime.
