Maraimalai Nagar residents seek FOB

February 08, 2019 04:06 pm | Updated 04:06 pm IST

Residents of Maraimalai Nagar have appealed to the State Highways Department and the Kancheepuram district Police to construct a foot overbridge (FOB) at the intersection of Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road and Thiruvalluvar Street Main Road, Kambar Nagar, connecting eastern and western side of GST Road.

They have also requested the police personnel to install traffic signals at the intersection of GST Road and Anna Road.

To reach the bus stop on GST Road, towards Tambaram Sanatorium, commuters have to walk 2km and local residents have to walk nearly a kilometre to cross the GST Road. To avoid having to take a detour, undisciplined commuters and pedestrians cross GST Road, near Kambhar Nagar.

“Due to the lack of a foot overbridge, crossing the stretch is not safe at night. Besides, the stretch is poorly illuminated. Except for a high-mast light at the intersection of GST Road and Thiruvalluvar Street Main Road, Kambar Nagar, there is little illumination. The high-mast light at the intersection of GST and Anna Road does not function,” says C. Sridhar, a resident of Maraimalai Nagar.

In addition, a traffic signal at the intersection of Anna Street and GST Road is essential to avoid the chaos at the intersection.

During rush hour, even the police personnel manning the intersection are unable to control the situation. A State Highways Department official says a feasibility study for the construction of a foot overbridge will be conducted soon.
