Owing to the deletion of electors’ names from the rolls, a large number of voters of the Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency had to return home disappointed without casting their vote.

K. Vinitha, an elector of New Washermenpet, said she could not vote after her name was removed from the rolls a few weeks ago. “I voted in the previous election. I did not shift my home. But the officials have deleted my name,” said Ms. Vinitha.

Many of the 24,000 electors, who were on the ASD (absent-shifted-duplicate) list were also not allowed to vote on Thursday. A few of them, who were able to prove their identity, were allowed to vote.

A few weeks ago, the Chennai District Election Office deleted over 45,000 names from the electoral rolls. On Thursday, several voters expressed disappointment at finding their names struck off the list. Many alleged that they did not get the photo voters slip.

In Korukkupet Railway Colony, an entire community of scrap dealers complained that their names weren’t on the electoral roll despite their possessing voter ID cards and Aadhaar cards and having their names enlisted for earlier elections.
