Man kills self

A 44-year-old man hanged himself at his house in Pulianthope on Wednesday, after he was held in police custody the previous night.

The police said the victim, S. Kathirvel, who worked as a loadman in Mint, was taken in to custody by the Basin Bridge police on Tuesday, following a complaint filed by the victim's neighbour, S. Needhi, stating Kathirvel had created nuisance in the neighbourhood. According to sources, a police team including sub-inspector of Basin Bridge K. Pandian, interrogated him all night and subjected him to the third degree.

A humiliated Kathirvel hanged himself at his house. His body was taken to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for post-mortem examination. A case under section 174 of IPC has been registered by the Basin Bridge police.
