August 22, 2013 07:00 am | Updated 08:03 am IST - CHENNAI:

A 30-year-old hair stylist was found dead on the tracks between the Athipattu and Nandiyambakkam railway stations in north Chennai on Wednesday.

He is suspected to have been run over by a train while crossing the tracks.

Around 9 a.m. on Wednesday, commuters noticed a mutilated body on the track and informed railway officials. A severed head lay some distance away. The government railway police took the body to the government hospital in Pooneri for post-mortem. Investigation revealed the victim was S. Nagaraj, a hairstylist who lived with his in-laws in Otteri. He worked in a saloon in Pooneri.

“Every day, Nagaraj travelled from his in-laws’ place to Pooneri where his parents also lived. On Wednesday, he may have been run over by a train while crossing the tracks,” said a GRP officer in Korrukkupet.

In April, a doctor attached to a primary health centre was killed on the tracks near Athipattu railway station.

Every month, on an average, at least 15 persons die on the tracks between Basin Bridge and Gummudipoondi railway stations. Stations at Tiruvottiyur, Ennore, Kathivakkam, Korukkupet, Basin Bridge, Minjur, Ponneri and Gummidipoondi are especially accident prone, the police said.
