Maduravoyal flyover in a bad shape

February 23, 2018 06:07 pm | Updated 06:07 pm IST

The facility lacks sufficient illumination at night; garbage and construction debris are found along the service lanes

Due to the absence of adequate safety features, the clover-shaped flyover in Maduravoyal is registering accidents frequently. The flyover lacks reflectors, signboards and, most important of all, sufficient illumination. Through eights years have passed since the flyover was inaugurated, a single lamp post has not been erected on the facility. There are lamp posts on the service lanes of the flyover, but the lamps there are in a state of disrepair for years. Some of them seem to have been damaged. “At night, the flyover is plunged in darkness and motorists rely on the headlights of their vehicles for safe movement,” says K. Venkatesh, a resident of Vanagaram. Moreover, the flyover and its service lanes are poorly maintained. There are deposits of sand in most parts of the flyover. Construction debris and garbage are dumped along the service lanes. The space under the flyover has been encroached upon by push cart vendors; and unauthorised parking by cab drivers is rampant. As there is no police presence on this section, it is noticeably unsafe at night.

The flyover and its service lanes badly need a facelifting exercise. A footpath and stormwater drains have to be constructed along the service lanes. “Necessary basic facilities including lighting will be provided soon,” says a State Highways official.
