Madras HC orders college to allow student to attend classes

Published - November 11, 2013 08:09 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Madras High Court has directed a private engineering college to permit a student, who was disallowed to attend the classes on ground of a failure to adhere to the dress code of the college. The student was directed to tender unconditional apology to the college management, faculty and other students in an open assembly.

Justice K.K. Sasidharan passed the order on a writ petition filed by K. Srinivasan and his father C. Kuppusamy who sought to permit the former to attend the classes so as to enable him to continue the course.

According to the petition, Srinivasan is a third year student in Sri Sairam Engineering College, West Tambaram. Since he failed to adhere to the dress code, he was not allowed to attend the classes. As the principal refused to allow him to attend the classes, they filed the writ petition seeking intervention of the court. The Anna University, in its counter, said the student behaved in an indecent manner with other students and the faculty members. The principal of the college stated that the student was not prepared to wear the uniform as per regulations.

Disposing of the writ petition, Mr. Justice Sasidharan directed the petitioners to tender unconditional apology as submitted by them and said thereafter, the principal should permit the student to attend the classes. The university was also directed to consider the application to condone the absence.
