CHENNAI: In what is suspected to be an attack following a mistaken identity, a group of Pachaiyappa’s College students assaulted a student of Loyola College assuming he was from Presidency College.

Sources with the Aminjikarai police said, on Thursday morning, a group of students, suspected to be from Presidency College, attacked Pachaiyappa’s College student Balamurali (20) at a bus stop in Arumbakkam knives and clubs. Balamurali received cut wounds on the head and neck and was admitted to Government Kilpauk hospital. He was later shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and is said to be out of danger.

Balamurali informed his friends on the attack. As there is a longstanding rivalry between students of Pachaiyappa’s and Presidency Colleges, an enraged group of Pachaiyappa’s students went to the bus stop and waited for the Presidency College students. When an MTC bus reached the stop, the group barged in and found a student later identified as Murugesan (19), a student of Loyola College.

The group assumed he was a Presidency College student and brutally assaulted him. Police reached the spot and rescued the youngster and sent him to GH for treatment. Two students Anand (19) and Raghavendran (18) were arrested for assaulting Murugesan, sources added.
