“Five streets in Triplicane now getting clean water”

The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board has submitted before the State Human Rights Commission that the problem relating to contamination of drinking water on five streets in Triplicane has been solved.

The board's Quality Assurance Wing had tested the water samples taken from the streets. All the samples had a residual chlorine level of more than 0.8 ppm. The water supplied to all the streets was found to be good, the Board submitted.

The Hindu dated March 5 that residents of Easwaradoss Street, T.P.Koil Street, Car Street, Singarachari Street and South Tank Square Street were receiving drinking water contaminated by sewage.

By an interim order of March 15, the Commission issued various directions to the CMWSSB after considering the report received from the board. The rights body had directed the Managing Director, CMWSSB, to set right the problem on a war-footing and report further development.

Accordingly, the Commission received a communication stating that there was no water pollution on the five streets now. The board also detailed the action it had taken.

In his final order, Justice Venkatachalamoorthy said after examining the matter, he was of the view that no further enquiry needed to be made. He treated as closed the case.
