Representatives of the Tamil film industry have threatened to stop releases for six months from June 12 if digital projection companies did not reduce their cost.
In a statement released after a fast here on Sunday, members of the Tamil film industry demanded a share in advertising revenue and reducing the processing rates. They appealed to the government to take charge of the digital processing firms.
Lead film-makers, producers and actors took part in the fast. Actor Sarath Kumar said that they were trying to solve the issue amicably through bilateral talks. Industry sources explained that companies charge per print per theatre to digitally transfer movies. “When you transfer it to 500 screens, the charges are astronomical. Earlier, producers spent Rs. 75,000 per print, but the film used to be physically available and could be run in other theatres,” explained a source.

In response, one of the digital processing houses said the allegations by the film community were baseless.
