June has brought with it a wet weather and promise of Krishna water from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh in three days, providing respite from scorching heat and fear of water shortage.
Murky sky and sporadic showers in the city brought down the day temperature to 31.7 degree Celsius, nearly six degrees below normal, on Monday. In Meenambakkam, the maximum temperature was 32.1 degree Celsius.
The rainy start to June and the sudden change in mercury level that peaked beyond 40 degree-mark until a few days ago has cheered residents. An upper air cyclonic circulation lies over west central and adjoining southwest Bay off South Andhra-North Tamil Nadu coast. The Meteorological department has forecast cool weather and thundershowers for two more days as temperature will be around 32 degree Celsius.

Dwindling resources of drinking water was another problem affecting residents. The release of Krishna water after nearly a month has meant stepping up of storage and increase in water supply. According to sources in Water Resources Department, Krishna water released from Kandaleru reservoir on Monday will reach city in three days. “This will help us maintain available resources in Chennai’s reservoirs till monsoon rains. Though Kandaleru reservoir has a low storage of 8,000 million cubic feet, water is being released to augment city’s water supply,” an official said.
