January 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:52 am IST - CHENNAI:

Moved by the plight of Soumita Dey, a former gymnast from West Bengal, fighting for life at a Kolkata hospital, AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced Rs. 5 lakh from party funds for her treatment.

According to a party statement, Ms. Jayalalithaa said she felt very sad on seeing the news that the 27-year old Dey is down with Neurosarcoidosis since 2012 with the lower half of her body paralysed.

She had represented Bengal at the national level for a decade from 1998 and took to coaching in 2005. She was a judge 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. In a recent interview, Dey had recalled how wrong treatment two years ago had deteriorated her health condition. Her mother had also said that the family did not have the money required for the treatment.
