Jawan to get disability pension with arrears

April 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - CHENNAI:

More than seven years after he was discharged from the Army after diagnosed with Schizophrenia F-20, an ex-serviceman is set to receive disability pension.

The Regional Bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal in Chennai, comprising Justice V. Periya Karuppiah and Lt. Gen. K. Surendra Nath allowed former signalman E. Ganesan’s application and directed authorities to pay disability pension at 50 per cent for life. The jawan would also receive arrears in three months.

The tribunal dismissed the Army’s contention that Schizophrenia F-20 was not attributable to military service, since the jawan did not suffer from the disorder before joining the forces nor did he inherit it from his family members.

Mr. Ganesan joined the Army in 1992 and was discharged in 2007 on invalidation as he was placed under low medical category for Schizophrenia F-20. Since his appeals for grant of disability pension were rejected, he approached the tribunal.
