There appears to be no end to the miseries of women commuters in the city.
Footboard travel, luggage blocking the doorway, men travelling in ladies compartments in the evening and ‘eve-teasing’ are the most common problems faced by women travelling by suburban trains.
This was the feedback from a drive conducted by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) as part of Women’s Day celebrations on Friday. The campaign started around 8 a.m. and involved over 200 RPF personnel including 50 women constables.

“The personnel boarded various trains and interacted with women commuters. They took feedback from over 1,500 women commuters. Many said that women sitting near the entrance and placing luggage by the doorway were major hassles. In some stations in north Chennai, the women also encountered eve-teasing,” said an RPF officer.
On Friday, the RPF officer reiterated that men were not allowed to travel in the ladies compartments at any point of time in the day. “Earlier, it was allowed. We will take strict action against those who flout the rules,” said the officer.
The feedback from Friday’s drive will be collected, analysed and necessary action will be taken, the officer said.
